When should you begin scheduling annual mammograms?

We also proudly offer 3D Screening mammography, which yields significantly more diagnostic information than traditional mammograms.
Breast cancer is the
second most common cancer affecting women in the United States, and The American Cancer Society estimates that over 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2026. The good news is that it’s survivable and treatable, and early diagnosis is key to optimal patient outcomes. We recommend that women begin scheduling mammograms as part of their annual exams at age 35, or earlier if they have a family history of cancer or present with other risk factors.
3D mammography is a state-of-the-art imaging technique that uses multiple X-rays of breast tissue to create a 3D image.
Clinical studies have shown that combining a 3D mammogram with a standard mammogram yields more accurate diagnoses than a standard mammogram alone. The process takes slightly longer than a traditional mammogram and enables our diagnosticians to see beyond dense tissue and detect cancers that might otherwise be missed. Combining both exams typically obviates the need for follow-up imaging, and it enables us to get right to work on your treatment plan.
You should also perform a monthly
Breast Self-Exam (BSE) at home approximately 7-10 days after each period, or on any date each month that you can easily remember if you’re no longer menstruating. If you notice any thickening or lumps in your breast tissue, or any unusual discharge from your nipples, contact our office for immediate follow-up.
