Any mother will tell you that giving birth is a life-changing experience, and that her children are her greatest gifts. But if you’re not quite ready for children, we’re also happy to help you select the form of contraception that works best for you!
If you’ve never considered Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) before, we’re a phone call away when you’d like to discuss your options. IUDs have a 99% success rate and are effective for up to 12 years. You won’t have to remember to take a daily pill or insert a device prior to sexual activity, and you can also have your IUD removed whenever you’re ready to become pregnant.
There are two types of IUDs available, and we’ll help you determine which is best for you and your body’s unique chemistry. Hormonal IUDs such as Mirena, Nexplanon, and Skyla release small amounts of hormones over time that partially suppress your ability to release an egg. The hormones also thicken your cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach your fallopian tubes. Copper IUDs such as Paragard cause your uterine lining (endometrium) to become inflamed, making it difficult for a fertilized egg (embryo) to implant and develop.
IUDs can be inserted during an outpatient office visit, and some are effective almost immediately. The procedure is quick and relatively painless, but you might experience initial cramping or discomfort shortly after insertion. We also recommend that you take the whole day off from work and take it easy for the rest of the day when you get home. You’ll probably experience some changes to your menstrual period as your body gets used to the device, and you might experience some additional side effects such as headaches, bloating, or mood swings. If the symptoms don’t go away within a week or worsen, be sure to contact your OB-GYN or Primary Care Physician (PCP) for immediate follow-up.
