What is postpartum depression? PPD is a specific form of depression that happens after childbirth, and it affects one out of every seven new mothers. Symptoms include anxiety, severe mood swings, or feelings of extreme sadness or loneliness. PPD most commonly presents a few weeks after childbirth, but symptoms can also begin much later or while you’re still pregnant.
How is postpartum depression treated?
Common treatment options for PPD include anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications, psychotherapy, and peer support groups. The most optimal form of treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms, and your healthcare team will help you decide which options are the best fit for you.
What can I do on my own to manage my symptoms? A few simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference on your road to recovery! A healthy, nutrient-rich diet is a must, and you should strive to get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise at least three times a week. Get a little fresh air and sunlight each morning, and spend some time reading or working on your baby’s scrapbook. Most importantly, let your “village” help out! Your partner and your parents can keep an eye on your baby while you get a few hours of undisturbed sleep, and you might also consider going out and treating yourself to a richly deserved spa day!
